We had all arrived a day early for the safari to really start so the 'rents could work on the time change and recover from their red eye flight so our first day was all about exploring Nairobi.
First, we went to the Nairobi Giraffe Center which is working on breeding/protecting Rothschild giraffes. We learned that there are three (main) different kinds of giraffes and we would mostly see Masai giraffes on our safari. Of course, we also had the opportunity to feed and get up close and personal with these giraffes. It's hard to tell from the photo, but we're on a platform maybe ten feet up in the air.
Next we headed over to Karen Blixen's house. You're possibly familiar with Karen from her book Out of Africa, which was also made into a movie. She came to Africa as a European in the early 1900s and led a very interesting life in colonial Kenya. Shannon and I had read the book and so it was great to make the connection.
We finished our Nairobi circuit by visiting Kazuri, a local bead manufacturer that employs women to help them support their families. We had a very interesting tour and enjoyed all the colorful beads. We've seen a handful of examples of organizations like this helping people in need without providing hand-outs, very cool.
We had a late lunch at a place called "Carnivore" which had gobs of meat some of which was exotic. We had ostrich (taste like chicken), crocodile, (tastes like chicken), and ox balls (does not taste like chicken, and was deeply regretted) to name a few.
After a busy morning, we relaxed in the hotel, caught up on the time zone and had a nice dinner. We were excited to head out "into the bush" on Monday!
