Kate and Kate arrived in Buenos Aires in the morning after a red-eye flight so we spent a day walking the streets of the city and napping. The next morning, we flew south to El Calafate. The winds of Patagonia quickly became apparent in town. Patagonia is wiiindy.
The following day, we went to check out the Perito Moreno glacier. The Glacier empties the Southern Patagonian ice sheet into the lakes of the region and is unlike any glacier we have in Washington. It's just huge. Below is the 4 of us on the approach. The glacier is 19 miles long and can be seen just to the left of my shoulder.
Once we arrived, we hit the board-walk trails to get a closer look. The highlight of this situation was that the glacier is regularly calving huge chunks of ice into the water. We saw many little pieces, but two really big (bus size?) chunks calve. The glacier is moving at 2 meters per day and is actually one of few glaciers in the world that isn't shrinking (most of the other glaciers we would see were shrinking).
We had a little time before a boat cruise and what better way to pass the time than some scotch on ice... in this case glacier ice.
We headed down to the shores to go on a boat cruise to get even closer. Kate (the sister) likes boat rides and didn't hesitate to tell us. The boat ride let us get close to the bizarre spires at glacier's edge.
After long travels for us (essentially from Dubai) and the Kates (from Salt Lake), it was great to have arrived in Patagonia and Perito Moreno was very stunning and rewarding!
